Gates owns about 481 million shares of Microsoft, about 6 percent of the
company. Since the software firm's initial public offering in 1986, Gates
has
sold almost $28 billion in stock and collected about $7 billion in dividends
(excluding a $3.3 billion payout in 2004, which he donated to his foundation
).
Most of the proceeds have been plowed into Cascade Investment, Gates's
personal investments vehicle. Cascade owns stakes in almost two dozen
public companies, including AutoNation, Canadian National Railway and
Strategic Hotels & Resorts.
Gates also owns investments in many other private businesses through Cascade
, including real estate (Four Seasons Hotels), photography (Corbis Images)
and energy (Sapphire Energy). Based on private company valuations and an
analysis of his cash inflows and outflows, Gates's closely held assets
probably exceed $30 billion. |
