Samsung will show its first Android Wear device at Google I/O next week,
says a new report.
According to CNET, which cites people familiar with the matter, Samsung will
be the third Android Wear partner to introduce a smartwatch powered by
Google’s wearable-centric operating system. Samsung’s device will be
similar to its Gear smartwatches, which are running Tizen, according to the
sources.
Samsung is said to be developing at least two versions of its Android Wear
smartwatch, one powered by an in-house Exynos chip and one with a Qualcomm
chip, but it’s not clear which version will be shown at I/O.
In the past, our own sources have told us that there will be another company
launching a Wear smartwatch at Google I/O, besides LG and Motorola. Aside
Samsung, Android Wear partners include Asus, HTC, and watchmaker Fossil, as
well as component makers like Qualcomm and Broadcom.
Samsung looks to be following the same strategy of diversification it used
successfully in the smartphone business, by releasing devices with multiple
operating systems. Its Tizen-powered Gear line has not been a genuine
success so far, but the company may have better luck with Android Wear,
which features closer integration with Android smartphones and tablets. |
