Delta Plots Major Rewrite of Frequent-Flier Rules
Passengers to Earn Miles Based on Prices of Tickets Purchased

offered by smaller U.S. carriers, said it would revamp its SkyMiles frequent
-flier plan starting Jan. 1 of next year so that passengers will earn miles
based on the prices of tickets purchased, not the distances flown.
Delta, the nation's No. 3 airline by traffic, is the largest U.S. carrier to
make the shift, following similar moves by Southwest Airlines Co. LUV +0.63
% , JetBlue Airways Corp. JBLU +0.84% and Virgin America. Delta, whose
SkyMiles program has 91 million members, said the changes are intended to
reward frequent fliers who spend more money, and that fares today aren't
correlated as closely to distances flown as they were in the early 1980s,
when U.S. airlines pioneered these programs.
Under Delta's new rules, scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, passengers
with no elite status in SkyMiles will receive five miles for each dollar
spent on tickets, excluding government taxes and fees. Those in the highest
elite level will receive 11 miles per dollar spent. For fliers redeeming
their miles, Delta will continue to award tickets by pricing them in miles,
not in actual cash fares, offering different levels of availability as it
does today.
Tim Winship, publisher of FrequentFlier.com, who was briefed on Delta's
plans, said, "There is no question there will be winners and losers. The
losers will be infrequent, price-sensitive travelers." Still, Mr. Winship
said he thinks it is just a matter of time before larger rivals American
Airlines Group Inc. AAL +0.95% and United Continental Holdings Inc. UAL +2.
52% follow Delta's lead.
An American spokeswoman said the company hasn't made any public disclosures
about plans for its AAdvantage program. A United spokesman said he couldn't
comment on any possible changes to MileagePlus.
Southwest, the No. 4 U.S. carrier, revamped its Rapid Rewards program in
2011 to award points based on dollars spent, but it also shifted redemption
policies so that the points needed for reward tickets will change depending
on demand for the flight a customer wants to select.
Big U.S. airlines generally, though, have been slow to adopt revenue-based
frequent-flier plans. Mr. Winship said airlines may have hesitated because
loyalty programs are complex and touch many aspects of operations, from
accounting and reservations to check-in and marketing.
Delta said last year it would begin adding minimum annual spending levels to
the mileage requirements that customers must meet to qualify for elite
SkyMiles status, starting in 2015. Customers this year must spend at least $
2,500 a year on tickets and fly 25,000 miles or 30 segments during the year
to attain the lowest elite level for 2015. For the next level, they must
spend $5,000 and fly 50,000 miles or 60 segments.
United last year followed Delta's announcement with a similar spending-based
component for elite status.
Jeff Robertson, vice president of Delta's SkyMiles program, said passengers
earning more miles under the new system will account for a larger share of
Delta's revenue than those who will receive fewer miles. The top 4% of Delta
customers drive more than a quarter of its revenue. Mr. Robertson said it
is important for Delta to give a higher rewards accrual rate to the
passenger who spends thousands of dollars a year on Delta, has elevated
elite status and may take many short but costly flights, than to an
infrequent, leisure passenger.
Mr. Robertson said hundreds of customers in focus groups over the past three
years indicated that the highest elite fliers felt under-rewarded.
Customers also made it clear they wanted it to be easier to redeem miles and
to have more lower-mileage award tickets available, he said. Delta has been
rapped in recent years for having stingy awards ticket availability at the
lowest mileage levels. He said the new program will improve award
availability at the lowest levels.
Delta plans to introduce a system with up to five tiers of redemption
choices so customers will have a wider variety of options, including one-way
reward tickets and the ability to redeem tickets using both miles and cash,
Mr. Robertson said. The new redemption levels will be disclosed in the
fourth quarter. Delta intends to introduce functions next year that will
allow customers to be able to use miles to purchase ancillary products such
as seating in the roomier Economy Comfort coach seats.
As an example, he said, awards tickets to Europe, now priced at 60,000, 90,
000 and 125,000 miles, could be broken into five tiers, including tickets
for 75,000 and 105,000 miles. He also said the company plans to improve its
website to make shopping and redemption simpler.

Delta家FFP成就垃圾一样,和乌合联盟一样,所以更没理由碰他家了。去年他家居然里

So if there is something we can do about it, that is stop riding on Delta
for however cheap fare is. If Delta's revenue gets a hit after this change,
it might hesitate the other carriers.

I don't fly delta only if their fare price is cheaper than others after I
factor the mileage value in. They treat frequent flyers like shxt and never
show any respect to us all.

没人觉得这是好事吗?redeem的时候可以换单程了,可以钱+点兑换了,而且chart应该
也不会改(因为刚改过),这都是好事啊。
是的,以后坐delta的飞机获得的里程会减少。不过我绝大部分的里程都不是靠实际飞
得来的,基本对我没有影响。坑的只是那些经常飞delta低仓位的和MR的人。

They are adding 2 more award tiers to currently 3. meaning... the lowest
award tickets are going to be even harder to get. Now it's almost invisible
for a lot of domestic routes.

太黑了 跟jetblue这种公司一样了。。。可是jetblue短途五千七千就能换,delta随随
便便就十几k起,还没票。。。
