Beasts of the Southern Wild
The main message from this movie is "to acknowledge that we are strong
enough to overcome even unknowable fear" and " to appreciate a different
lifestyle, more importantly, a different value system. "
Why don't I like this movie?
1. The movie romanticized the nobility of being dirt poor, neglected and
uneducated too much that beyond my bearing, even though if you pay attention
, you would never find any course words spoken by the people in this movie,
which makes me doubt the director intention even more.
2. And the director fetishized crushing poverty and horrible parenting in
ways that only somebody who has experienced neither could.
3. I believe it’s a false concept or just some kind of pleasant fantasy to
believe that people who sleep in the dirt and dig or catch their own dinners
are possessed more spiritual richness that you’re somehow lacking when you
live in the city and buy grocery in paper bags. And I always believe that
fear and desperation goes with poverty, brutaless goes with uneducation.
4. And I am disappointed by the people on this island who refused to move on
not because of their love to this land that they are rooted on, but because
of their fear of the shelters which are imagined as a prison.
How could I appreciate this movie?
Only by realizing that this is a magic realism movie and treating this is a
fantastical drama from the point of view of a little girl whose father is
dying and whose world is changing and she doesn’t understand why or what
she can do to make things right. It’s not aiming for gritty realism or hard
-hitting journalistic attention to the plight of the poor minority or a
National Geographic special. It’s a dream-like little tale a little girl
tells to make sense of her life BY BEING GROWING UP and to come to grips
with the things that are happening to her by BEING BRAVE. It’s emotionally
honest even as its fantasy is unusual, just like all good fantasy should be.
And only by treating this small group on the island as one of microcosm
communities in the United States that do not want to be a part of this big
mess that modern civilization has made but not a desperately impoverished
group of illiterate people living with an unintentional death wish. | N**Y
