How many people know the Michael Jordan samurai sword story? (self.nba)
I originally posted it in this thread but figured it would get buried and
most people knew about it already. But a few searches makes it seem like it'
s never been posted on this sub. Here it is, starting with this intriguing
photograph.
The story: after Jordan's freshman year at UNC, some evangelist was doing a
prison ministry tour in which -- and the reasons for this are unclear -- his
act involved
Getting a notable person to lie down on a table
Putting a watermelon on their stomach
Getting a samurai sword
Putting on a blindfold
Chopping the watermelon in half with a mighty swoop of the samurai sword,
while it rests on the person's stomach, miraculously leaving them unscathed
I guess the idea was that this crazy act demonstrated the power of faith. Or
something. Regardless, this time the notable person was still-young Jordan.
So they brought Jordan to the prison, had him play against the prison's
best player to win the prisoners' respect (!), and set the future GOAT up on
the altar for the sword trick.
Except Jordan was unusually lean, and the evangelist was nervous. And Jordan
was too, first lying down then sitting up, then lying down and sitting back
up again, until he eventually agreed to have someone just hold him down
while he closed his eyes.
All of this was apparently somewhat justified, because the evangelist took
two strikes to do it, went a little too far and cut through not only the
watermelon, but through Jordan's special All-star warmups, and into the skin
below.
A picture of the immediate aftermath.
Luckily, the wound was not very deep, and a few stitches closed it up. But
from that day forward, Michael Jordan resolved to bleed only Gatorade. The
last sentence is my conjecture.
Full story here. That article says the original source is a 1998 Chicago Sun
-Times article I can't find, so it's presumably legitimate.

Who the fuck would do that if they have a promising basketball career coming
up. Especially if it isn't staged. What the fuck?

Well I mean if you were a beggar or something like that and they paid you to
do it I could understand. But this says they only chose celebrities. And
only performed in prisons. Wat?

i mean, jordan loves to gamble

In the Space Jam documentary, he gambled his freedom.

Who does it? The GOAT. Lebron just doesn't have that faith gene.

Mike didn't fear death. Another reason why LeBron will never be MJ

shit like this is why i think jordan was literally psychotic in regards to
putting himself on the highest pedestal possible. he'd risk his life to make
himself seem brave because someone said he wasn't man enough.

I feel like you could get a young MJ to do a lot of shit if you just told
him he wasn't "man enough".

Yeh, that's it. He's probably the most competitive person of our generation.
Kids are amazed by LeBron and Michael had way more fire. Dude did not want
to lose at anything. That's probably not healthy, but neither is spending
all day as a keyboard gangsta typing about games you never played and stats
you could never come close to.

getting gutted like a fish by a lunatic in a prison, I would choose the
former. But you're not wrong.

Harsh dude. His death was definitely a freak occurrence. The samurai sword
bullshit is definitely far stupider than partying with some coke.

People don't realize this is the moment Jordan was granted the assassin like
killer instinct. A samurai instilled his abilities into a basketball player
and the rest is history.

Pistons were like "Foul him whenever he comes to the lane" and Jordan was
like "Whatever, not as bad as the time I got chopped up with a sword."
[–][GSW] Jeremy Linrbloyalty 5
It's hilarious that Jordan was much more upset about the tear in his clothes
than the tear in his stomach.
After shit like this easy to see why MJ was near psychopath competitive.
Took a blade like an anime character, after that what do you care about a
rival on the court.

to add a weird postscript to this story, the martial arts evangelist who
