IRVING, Texas --- Three years ago LSU coach Les Miles stepped to the podium
and denied any interest in
the Michigan job, a take-that to the media that famously ended with his “
have a great day” line.
That moment came in the middle of the Southeastern Conference Championship
week in Atlanta.
Three years later it’s a different month and a different place, but the
schools in question remain the same.
Would Miles leave LSU for Michigan, the school where he played and later
coached under the late Bo
Schembechler?
At a Wednesday press conference set to highlight the Tigers matchup with the
Aggies, questions quickly
turned to the Michigan job opening. It didn’t help that the news of Rich
Rodriguez’s firing came smack dab
in the middle of the presser.
Like three seasons ago when Michigan let go of Lloyd Carr, Miles stood
behind LSU.
“I have received no contact from Michigan,” he said. “I am really here to
speak about no other school. I’m
here to speak about LSU.
“Michigan will be fine. They will always be Michigan.”
Questions from reporters continued, so much so that the Cotton Bowl
moderator asked the gathered media
to stick to questions about LSU’s upcoming game with Texas A&M.
“I very much enjoy where I’m at,” Miles said. “I don’t think anybody
has any reason to be concerned in any
way.”
Much like the last go-around with Miles-to-Michigan chatter, the national
media has picked up the Mad
Hatter baton and run with it. With Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh expected to
head to the NFL, popular
opinion tabs Miles and San Diego State head coach Brady Hoke as the next
coach of the Wolverines. Both
have already spent time on the sidelines in Ann Arbor.
“Speculation is not factual,” said Miles in response to the reports that
he is one of Michigan’s top
candidates. “The only thing I can say to you is my focus is complete. We’
re preparing to play a great A&M
team. That’s my want and desire.
“I have no real view of anything else but what I’m getting done right here
. Preparing a team, taking them to
practice (Wednesday) and working that event.” |
