orts-news/gatorsfirst/offensive-strategy-101-spread-vs-pro-style.html)
When new head coach Will Muschamp took over in late 2010, he speculated that
he would probably bring in a pro-styleoffense, which was a clear departur
e from the spreadoffense that Urban Meyer had installed in 2005. We've see
n the results of Meyer's high powered offense over the past six years, and m
any questioned the rationale behind the change. When it was announced that C
harlie Weis would take over as offensive coordinator, the spread was dead in
Gainesville. Feelings were mixed on the idea, but most people don't even kn
ow the differences between the spread and a pro-style offense.
Firstly, let's clarify a few things. Urban Meyer didn't install a true sprea
d offense. True spreads are designed to spread (hence the name) the defense
thin horizontally by placing 3 to 5 receivers away from the offensive line a
long the line of scrimmage. At that point, receivers will work various verti
cal routes to open up gaps in the thinner defense for the route runner to fa
ll in to.
Often times, the offense will not include a running back in the backfield, i
nstead positioning him on the line like a receiver. Also, the no-huddle appr
oach is used to discombobulate the defense and not allow them to get set. Yo
u抣l see this type of approach used frequently at Houston, Texas Tech, Oklah
oma State, & Missouri. This pass-happy attack has produced some highly infla
ted quarterback numbers in college football, and many of these quarterbacks
have not panned out in the NFL. However, the New England Patriots utilized t
he spread offense quite often in 2007, when they were undefeated entering th
e Super Bowl.
The scheme that Meyer installed was a blend of the spread & option offenses
known as the spread option(once again, hence the name). The guys at Smartf
ootball.com did a great job of breaking down his scheme here. Here is the sh
ortened version. In this approach, the offense would still spread the receiv
ers horizontally on the line of scrimmage. However, the running back, and of
ten times the quarterback, would be featured, exploiting the thinness of the
front seven, and running through wide open lanes. This method employs many
variations of the wildcat? Single-wingformations, to varying levels of suc
cess. Primarily, it amplifies the effectiveness that speed can provide to an
offense.
This attack couldn't have been run better than in 2007 & 2008 when Tim Tebow
, Percy Harvin, Jeff Demps, & Chris Rainey tore up opposing defenses on the
ground, while still being very effective in the air. This culminated with an
other BCS Championship for Florida in 2008. The spread option offense has ta
ken off in popularity recently due to these successes, and is being used at
high profile programs such as Oregon under Chip Kelly, Kansas State under Bi
ll Snyder, West Virginia & Michigan under Rich Rodriguez, and Arkansas, Tuls
a, & Auburn under Gus Malzahn.
With Charlie Weis in town, these principles are thrown out the window. A pro
-style offense will be put into place. However, pro-stylecan mean many thi
ngs. Three methods in particular fall under the category of pro-style. These
include Bill "Walsh's West Coas" offense, "Air Coryell", & the "Erhardt-Per
kins"method.
The west coast offense is designed with short routes & efficient passing in
mind, and uses the running back out of the backfield to catch passes. The in
tent is to spread the defense thin with horizontal passes, eventually bringi
ng the secondary in, which opens up vertical passing and open lanes for runn
ing backs to get past the safeties. Unlike the theory to establish the run t
o open the passing game, it emulates the opposite. Many teams have used this
offense in the NFL, and it has produced great success for the San Francisco
49ers under Bill Walsh, Green Bay Packers under Mike Holmgren, Denver Bronc
oes under Mike Shanahan, & currently the Philadelphia Eagles under Andy Reid
.
Air Coryell is a method pioneered by Don Coryell with the Chargers in the 70
's & 80's, and further employed by Joe Gibbs' Washington teams in the 80's,
Norv Turner抯 offenses in Dallas in the 90's, & Mike Martz's Rams teams in t
he 2000'. This method utilizes spread fundementals to stretch the defense th
in. At least two receivers are running deep routes on every play, while the
others are running intermediate routes. Crisp route running & timing is key.
With this in mind, the quarterback must have a strong, but accurate arm. Al
so, most offenses that successfully used this method had a big bruising runn
ing back to run between the tackles. This forces the front seven to collapse
and open space for the receivers to roam.
While both of these schemes have worked to great success, neither will be in
stalled by Charlie Weis. If the past is a clear indicator of the future, Wei
s will employ the third pro-style technique: the Erhardt-Perkins offense. We
is has used this method in stops in New York, New England, Notre Dame, & mos
t recently Kansas City.
This original EP offense was predicated on running to open up the passing ga
me, very different from the west coast method. To do this, the running game
must be established, and the passing game will then thrive with play-action
passing. This baits the defense to collapse on a suspected running play, all
owing the offense to throw vertically over the secondary. With the amount of
running that the offense does, this is clearly an offense that eats up a lo
t of clock, therefore keeping the ball in our hands instead of theirs.
The offensive line will pull & trap on almost every running play, meaning if
the offense is running left, the right guard will come off the line and pul
l far to the left an be the defacto fullback for the running back. This meth
od will require large a strong offensive linemen. Blocking by the fullback a
nd running backs are also key to protect the quarterback.
Weis has modified the original version substantially, including receiver set
s of 3 & 4 wide. In fact, he runs the same exact play from multiple sets jus
t to throw the defense off guard. Tight ends are very important in his schem
e, and Weis has been known to use two TE formations. He doesn't use nearly t
he amount of running plays as the original version, but enough to effectivel
y utilize play-action. Play-action out of an I-Formation will be a welcome s
ight for many Gator fans.
Proper route running, making a highlight reel catch, or breaking a tackle ar
e all going to be the same for our corps of athletes here in Gainesville. Th
at is just accomplished with high skill and determination, regardless of the
formation. However, I feel that the nomenclature of the new system will be
the toughest hurdle for our squad, as it is completely different from Meyer'
s spread. If Weis can mild the naming convention and reduce the sheer number
of plays in year one, it'll be a success.
There is a ton more to speak of on this topic, but this was intended more as
a basic cursory introduction to the Florida Gator offensive methodology. If
you'd like a more in-depth discussion on the "Weisian Approach visit this
site, or read this piece by the guys at Smartfootball.com. Spencer Hall at
EDSBS also wrote a humorous piece on the subject here.
In case you were wondering, while at Florida Steve Spurrier used the "Fun-n-
Gu" method, an attacking offensive method with big-play potential on every p
lay. Spurrier claims that it is simply "chuckin the ball downfield" But, the
key is a smart quarterback, who can properly read defenses at the line of s
crimmage and audible accordingly. With the right level of talented receivers
, the 90's Gators became the Mighty Gators. You can read more on the method
here and here.
Elsewhere in the SEC, teams use the following schemes:
Florida - New pro-style (EP)
Vanderbilt - New west coast attack (spread last year)
Tennessee - Pro-style with new spread sets (new coordinator)
Kentucky - Pro-style (EP)
Georgia - Pro-style (EP)
South Carolina - Fun-n-Gun
Mississippi - Wildcat friendly spread option (new coordinator)
Mississippi State - Spread option (same as Meyer's)
Auburn - Malzahn抯 modified spread option
Arkansas - Pro-style (EP & Air Coryell sets)
Alabama - Multiple sets, mostly pro-style
LSU - Mix of spread & pro-style (new coordinator)
