Alabama names Zow starting quarterback for opener

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Andrew Zow, who has started 20 games for Alabama the
past two seasons, will enter the season as the Crimson Tide's starting
quarterback.
On Wednesday, Tide coach Mike DuBose named the junior his starter for the
season opener at UCLA Sept. 2. Zow beat out sophomore Tyler Watts.
"Both will play, but Andrew's the one that will get the majority of the reps
from this point on," DuBose said. "Zow will start, and we'll still bracket
Tyler as a first-team player and consider him a first-team player, and he
will play. He still will have a chance to continue to compete for that job."
Zow emerged from spring practices listed at No. 1 and has drawn rave reviews
from DuBose the entire preseason.
He put up good numbers in third-ranked Alabama's scrimmage last Saturday,
completing 18 of 27 passes for 157 yards. Watts was 13-of-25 for 112 yards.
The two quarterbacks split playing time last season.
Zow started all but two of Alabama's 13 games, passing for 1,799 yards and
12 touchdowns. He was the league's seventh-rated passer.
Watts played in nine games, throwing for 498 yards with two TDs and five
interceptions.
The two had alternated series in Alabama's final two games of 1999, against
Florida and Michigan.
DuBose said the quarterback battle was a friendly rivalry.
"Those two guys are as team oriented as a player will ever be," DuBose said.
"They're both competitive. They both want to be the starter. They both want
the other guy to play some but they want to play the majority of the time,
but that's the way you expect them to be."
Also Wednesday, DuBose named Neil Thomas as the starting kicker and Lane
Bearden as starting punter. Bearden will also handle kickoff duties.
DuBose also announced the team captains: center Paul Hogan on offense,
tackle Kenny Smith on defense, and Brad Ledbetter on special teams. | B****2

I was watching the Hoover/Pratville game for the state championship last
night. Andrew Zow was a commnentator. I just remembered how long it has been
, or at least felt, since we have had Zow.
So, I looked him up and found this....
