1,098 career wins
Summitt became the first NCAA basketball coach, men’s or women’s, to reach
the 1,000-win mark in 2009 and added 98 more victories before stepping down
in 2012. Her career win total still stands as the most among NCAA Division
I men’s or women’s basketball coaches. It’s also more than 100 wins ahead
of the sport’s second-winningest women’s coach, Stanford’s Tara
VanDerveer. On March 22, 2005, Summitt passed legendary North Carolina men’
s coach Dean Smith to become the winningest coach, men’s or women’s in
NCAA history. Summitt finished with an overall record of 1,098-208 and an .
841 career winning percentage.
8 national championships
Summitt led Tennessee to all eight of its national championships in women’s
basketball, the first six of which came within a 12-year span. The Lady
Vols claimed their first national title in 1987 and won again in 1989 and
1991. Perhaps the peak of Summitt’s career came in 1996-98, when she led
the Lady Vols to three consecutive national titles, including a perfect 39-0
season in 1997-98. Tennessee won its most recent championships in 2007-08.
Summitt’s eight national championships rank second all-time among NCAA
women’s basketball coaches behind Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma, who has 11
titles.
22 Final Four appearances
Tennessee was a perennial power under Summitt, reaching 18 NCAA Final Fours
and four AIAW Final Fours before the first-ever NCAA women’s basketball
tournament was held in 1982. Throughout Summitt’s 38-year tenure, the Lady
Vols never went more than four years without playing in the Final Four. They
appeared in 10 Final Fours in a span of 13 years, from 1979 to 1991, and
went to 11 Final Fours in a span of 14 years from 1995 to 2008. Tennessee’s
trips to the national semifinals under Summitt produced a total of 15 title
-game appearances.
16 SEC championships
By virtually any measure, Tennessee dominated the SEC throughout Summitt’s
coaching career. The Lady Vols won 16 SEC regular-season championships and
16 SEC tournament titles, and they swept the conference’s regular-season
and conference titles eight times. Summitt led Tennessee to the first-ever
SEC tournament championship in 1980 and won her final SEC tournament in 2012
. Summitt posted a 458-69 record in SEC play with the Lady Vols for a career
SEC winning percentage of .869.
7-time national coach of the year
Summitt received countless awards and accolades throughout her career,
including a number of national coach of the year awards. She was named
Naismith College Coach of the Year five times — in 1987, 1989, 1994, 1998
and 2004 — and she was a three-time winner of the Women’s Basketball
Coaches Association coach of the year award. She also was named coach of the
year by the Associated Press and the United States Basketball Writers
Association in 1998. Summitt was an eight-time SEC Coach of the Year and was
named the Naismith Coach of the 20th Century, and she received the
Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. |
