Inspired by work from the 1970s, scientists in the US, Russia and Ukraine
have developed a new way to produce bulk quantities of individual
nanoclusters. The "impurity-helium gas injection technique" can generate
isolated nanoclusters of noble gases, but it works for other elements too.
The results could be used to study the fundamental properties of
nanoclusters for use in catalysis and other industrial applications.
