Think this way -- if the rebate is not "instant" but, instead, mail-in
rebate. I am sure you agree that you will pay the tax as the original price
(based on $149.99). Then you mail-in the receipt to get rebate at later date
. The rebate will not give you back any tax you paid at the purchase.
Therefore, the tax you paid is calculated from the original price.
