China's tried to create its very own mobile OS ecosystem in the past, but
let's face it, the attempt with OPhone was hardly something that would make
the nation proud. This time round, though, a company by the name of Shanghai
Liantong has joined forces with the ISCAS (Institute of Software at the
Chinese Academy of Sciences) and the government to launch COS, which simply
stands for China Operating System. While there's no official mention of this
, it appears that HTC is a big supporter behind this project, which would
match what we heard from a Wall Street Journal report from August.
Apart from the open source code, this Linux-based OS is said to be developed
"entirely independently," in the hopes of breaking the foreign software
monopoly, as well as providing better localization for the likes of language
input, cloud services and monetization. At yesterday's launch event, the
head of ISCAS criticized iOS for being a closed ecosystem, while Android has
the infamous fragmentation problem, and both Windows plus Android are let
down by poor security.
Ironically, all the COS variants -- in the form of phones, tablets, PCs and
set top boxes -- shown in the promo video after the break are very Android-
like, and some of those features like multi-tasking, content streaming plus
remote desktop are nothing new. Even the HTC One and Butterfly S we saw
looked like they were still carrying Sense 5. But hey, maybe such a close
relationship with the Chinese government is just what HTC needs for its
recovery this year. | n***s

Sungy Mobile's President: IPO Riches From Google Play Apps

SungyBack in November, Sungy Mobile (GOMO) pulled off a successful IPO (up
about 19%). The China-based company is a top app developer of launchers for
Google GOOG +0.69%’s Android operating system.
For the first nine months of this year, revenues spiked by 84.4% to $37.6
million. In fact, Sungy has also been able to post strong profits, with net
income reaching $10 million.
So to learn more about the company, I recently interviewed the president,
Xiangdong Zhang. Here’s what he had to say:
Tom Taulli: Some background on the IPO process?
Xiangdong Zhang: We started the IPO process at the beginning of this year.
One thing went really smooth was that we received very few comments from SEC
after submitting our F-1 form.
The roadshow also went very well. We actually met many of our investors who
were users of our apps!
Taulli: Why Android?
Zhang: Andriod phones represent about 70% of the global market. That’s why
we chose the Android platform.
As for launchers, they are key. They are the first touch point before using
any app. When your phone is on, the launcher can essentially generate
recurring traffic by directing you through widgets, alerts and promotions.
Taulli: What are your markets?
Zhang: In terms of users, about 30% are in China, 15% in the US, 13% in
Korea and 10% in the EU.
But when it comes to revenues, things are much different. About 85% is
outside China. And of this, 60% comes from the US.
Taulli: What have been the drivers for winning in the market?
Zhang: First of all, we have a big focus on innovation and development.
Consider that we have over 300 engineers working on the launcher product
line.
For example, we were the first to develop next-generation technologies for
hand gestures as well as the first to use a 3D rendering engine.
Over time, we have also created a great global brand. Our main app has 4.5
stars from 1 million users on Google Play. There have also been over 100
million downloads. Only about 7 or 8 apps are at this level.
