Fees from New Jersey
Edison, N.J. (April 15, 2014) – Today at a town hall meeting, Gov. Chris
Christie said he would like to see realty transfer fees eliminated from New
Jersey. The move would help all homeowners around the state, particularly
those facing foreclosure or short sale.
The housing market in New Jersey has shown positive growth the last five
quarters, and eliminating the realty transfer fee would further help sellers
, who would see those fees put back into their homes as equity. As the real
estate market is a driving force of the state’s economy, the move would
also stimulate growth in other retail markets.
“NJAR® commends Gov. Christie for his position of making realty
transfer fees a thing of the past in New Jersey,” said Jarrod C. Grasso,
CEO of the New Jersey Association of REALTORS®. “We look forward to
working with the governor and our state’s legislators to repeal the realty
transfer fee and helping New Jersey’s homeowners.”
NJAR® strongly opposed the realty transfer fees increases implemented in
2002 and 2005 under previous administrations. During those years, the
housing market was in a boom, and homeowners either had equity in their
homes or could build it faster. However, once the economy collapsed, it was
clear that the realty transfer fees were a true burden on many and the fee
should be eliminated. The association has been discussing the possibility of
rolling back or repealing this onerous fee for many years.
According to NJAR®’s monthly housing market study, the March 2014
median sales price in New Jersey was $299,900. The realty transfer fee on a
home that price would be $1,714. The median sales prices and realty transfer
fees for all 21 New Jersey Counties are as follows:
