New York university dean 'made students work as her slaves... or she would
revoke their funding'

A dean at one of America’s leading Catholic universities forced students to
work as slaves for her or face losing their funding, according to court
papers.
Cecilia Chang, 57, is said to have ordered the teenagers to drive her around
and cook and clean for her - all for free - or she would see to it their
scholarships were revoked.
She is also alleged to have instructed one student to accompany an unnamed
‘older male’ to a function that was not related to university life,
although nothing of a sexual nature occurred.
Ms Chang, who was a dean at the prestigious St John’s University in New
York, called herself ‘the boss’ and ordered students ‘not to tell’
anyone about the extra duties she put upon them when the FBI started
investigating.
She was suspended from her role as dean of the Institute for Asian Studies
in January over expense account discrepancies and later forced out.
Ms Chang has been charged with stealing more than $1 million from the
university to fund a lavish lifestyle of expensive clothes, casino trips and
and her son's St. John's law-school tuition.
But the new allegations filed at Brooklyn’s federal court have rocked the
respected university, which considers ‘faith and service’ to be its
founding principles.
Founded by the Vincentian fathers in 1870, it is highly selective and has
around 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students on its campuses in New
York and Rome.
It’s motto is ‘Educatio Christiana Animae Perfectio’, or ‘Christian
education perfects the soul’ and it counts Democratic New York senator
Charles Rangel among it alumni.
The FBI probe is based on interviews with unnamed students who won
scholarships worth $5,000 or more per semester and were awarded by Ms Chang.
Part of the agreement for the funding was the students would work part-time
for the Asian Studies programme, but Ms Chang is said to have taken that far
beyond what it was meant to be.
One student, according to the complaint, described having to report to Ms
Chang's home each day to drive her to the hair salon, to restaurants and to
the airport.
Others allegedly shopped for food, cooked her meals and washed her clothes.
In total, the legal papers state, she had three student housekeepers who
each worked 122 days a year.
In a separate matter, Ms Chang is also facing a probe into whether she sent
a scholarship student to work for her business associate Danny Lau as a
housekeeper and nanny for his children, again unpaid.
Mr Lau, 61, a wealthy investment and mortgage company owner, said he had not
spoken to Ms Chang in years but refused to answer further questions about
her.
A St John’s spokesman declined to comment on Chang’s case.
