申请哥大，被要求去参加这个写作考试。
不知道大概什么情况，没有听说过谁考过啊？

UPDATE: As of the Fall 2011 term, the Office of Graduate Students Services
will no longer require students to demonstrate their English proficiency
upon admission to the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied
Science. All continuing students are now waived from having to complete the
English Proficiency Essay Exam regardless of their past admission based test
scores (TOEFL/IELTS) or past ALP essay exams and/or ALP courses.
Language proficiency will now be the responsibility of the student.
Regardless of previous scores, students should continue to work on
maintaining adequate verbal and/or written abilities for successful
integration within their classes and future professional endeavors. This is
especially true for students who had existing scores below the previous
minimum level 8/level 10 degree requirement. We highly encourage students to
be proactive in addressing their own proficiency deficiencies by utilizing
the many resources available with Columbia University and throughout New
York City. As a rule, ISSO will not permit students to drop courses or fall
below full-time registration for language proficiency deficiencies.
As a general guide, we encourage non-native English speakers to actively
work on their proficiency through some of the many strategies:
• In classes, minimize or avoid workgroups that consist of
only members of your own native language. Actively working in groups with
diversity of students and backgrounds will ensure you resist the temptation
of defaulting to your native language. Speaking and writing in English
requires on-going practice. This technique also works with study groups.
• At social events, actively engage in dialog by meeting and
greeting other students. This will ensure you have the opportunity to
engage in dialog while practicing your language skills. Student leadership
groups, such as EGSC (Engineering Graduate Student Council), are great ways
to perfect your skills.
• Work with your faculty, department administrators, and the
Center for Career Education to review your resume and to have the
opportunity to practice for your future job/career interviews. Employers
will expect our students to have honed their language proficiency to be
successful employees. Our students are expected to not only have an
expertise in their engineering disciplines, but also be experts in
articulating their skills and job functions to their future supervisors,
colleagues and clients. Even if your resume is perfect, your ability to
articulate your thoughts and skills during an interview is imperative.

Please note that if the policy changes in the future (Example, for future
Fall 2012 admitted students), a new English proficiency requirement policy
will apply only to new Columbia Engineering students. As a continuing
student, you may still be exempt from a new policy unless you later apply
and are later admitted to a new degree program or degree level to which you
were originally admitted.
For students who have already completed ALP courses prior to the update of
this policy for the Fall 2011 term, we commend you on the efforts you have
completed to address any areas of deficiencies. American Language Program
courses are designed to assist students with gaining a competitive edge with
regard to language proficiency…which may have long lasting implications
for personal, professional and future employment opportunities. We will
maintain a copy of your prior ALP scores for our records in the event you
request access to future employers who may request information about your
level of proficiency.

我是想看看有没有人考过，可以说说大概是怎么考？据说要手写而不是机打。
而且不知道大概什么类型的文章，针对实事评论吗？

发帖数: 59 | 10 这个是被录取以后开学要考的吧。
工学院今年秋季新政策取消了这个考试，其他学院有不取消的。如果托福成绩过了
100分或者别的条件，可以免掉这个考试。
没考过就不做TA（不确定），带实验值班什么的。毕业要求可能需要pass这个考试。

考吧 考吧~~ NYU 也有类似的考试 ALI 有些学院是 硬性的要求来的都要考~~反正就是
为了赚钱~~新来的同学说去上ALI的 语言课程 无聊要死而且还浪费钱耽误时间！
