Volunteer Descriptions
Mentoring Programs
Mentor a middle school or high school student. Help a youth to improve
academically, broaden their horizons, develop stronger interpersonal
skills
and a more positive self-image, and, most importantly, learn how to
cultivate valuable and memorable friendships. Mentoring is a one year
commitment, and mentoring pairs meet for a minimum of two hours every
other
week. To help facilitate the mentoring relationship and foster a sense
of
shared experience between other program participants, APEX organizes
workshops and group events, which included museum and art tours, rafting
trips, and apple picking.
Educational & Wellness Programs
Build relationships and work with students in academic and athletic
programs
. These are 10 week programs in both the fall and spring semester.
There
is a minimum one semester commitment.
The 4th Grade Prep Program prepares students for the statewide
standardized
English Language Arts (ELA) and Math exams, which determine placement in
New
York City public schools for students starting in the 6th grade.
The SAT Preparation Program equips students for the standardized college
entrance examination by building skills and confidence in test-taking
strategies and subject materials. The program consists of instruction
and
diagnostic exams.
The Hoops Basketball Program teaches 4th and 5th graders the game of
basketball and the values of healthy living, teamwork, and
sportsmanship.
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Help plan larger events for the students with other APEX volunteers.
You
can volunteer to help out with events based on your schedule.
