American style:
Outside in: Properly set utensils are placed in the order in which they will
be used. Generally, you are safe to start with the utensils farthest from
your plate, and then work your way in as you progress form course to course.
If these utensils are not moved by your server when your entrée is cleared
, you may bring the fork down to your left and the spoon down to your right
at this point.
Cutting edge: knives should always be placed with the serrated edge facing
toward your plate.
Never the twain shall meet: once a utensil has touched food, it must never
touch the table’s surface again.
Taking a breather: Think of your plate as a face of a clock, Placing the top
of the knife at twelve o’clock and the base of the handle at 4 o’clock
with the serrated edge facing in; meanwhile, the top of the form should be
place at twelve o’clock, and the base of its handle at eight o’clock.
Finished: to indicate you are finished with your mean, situated the knife
just as you would for resting, but place the fork alongside the left edge of
the knife.
Soup suspension: when you a re resting, place the soup spoon in the cup or
the bowl, with the handle at about three o’clock.
Soup to Nuts: When soup is served in a bowl on a plate, if the rim of the
plate is wide eough, you may place the spoon on the plate behind the bowl,
with the bowl of the spoon to the left and handle to the right.
Salad schedule: your salad will be served before the main course. IN the
finer establishments, you’ll be provided with a salad knife, along with the
usual salad fork to help you cut the lettuce leaves into manageable bite
size.
B.M.W: which stands for “bread, meal, and Water”. when you are sitting at
your place setting, this is the order these articles should appear from left
to right.
Napkin notice: you shoul not take you napkin from you place setting until
the hose does so. When prompt, unfild your napkin complietely, refild it in
half, and place the fold at your knees with the other two corners at your
hips. This allows you easy access to one corner at a time to dab your lips
and wipe crunbs from your mouth.
Food to face: proper posture is an essential aspect of gracious dining. Sit
with your back straight, leaning in slighyly from your hips, and raise your
fiid over your plate up to your mouth. DSo not slouch or bring your face to
your food.
Elbows off the table: rest hand in our lap when are not using them to eat.
Same settings: your place setting must match everyone else’s so you are not
at liberty to rearrange it. You maybe attempted to bring your bread closer
and move your water glass to your left, you must reframe from doing so. The
purpose of this arrangement is not merely to create an aesthetically
pleasing table, but to enable other diners and the wait staff to easily
