The 59th annual Winter Antiques Show runs today through Feb 3 at Manhattan's
Park Avenue Armory, with thousands of works available from experts in
American, English, European, and Asian fine and decorative arts dating from
the 7th century BC through the 1970s, organizers say.
Highlights of the show are said to include an 1862 letter written by
President Abraham Lincoln to Major General George B. McClellan. The missive
is offered by Kenneth W. Rendell Gallery.
Didier Ltd. offers jewelry designed by Pablo Picasso, Jean Vendome, Louise
Nevelson, and Alexander Calder. Dealer Peter Finer is offering a full suit
of armor, circa 1580, from Northern Italy.
Collectors of Dutch porcelain will want visit Aronson of Amsterdam, to see
22 Samuel van Eenhoorn Delftware pieces—a cache said to be larger than that
owned by Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum or the Musee Royaux in Brussels.
Objects on offer also include American and Old Master paintings,
Presidential items, Modernist furniture, ancient Roman sculpture, jewelry,
Italian glass, modern photography, English furniture, antique rugs, garden
ornament, Americana, and much more.
Show organizers say every object exhibited has been vetted for quality and
authenticity. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. daily except Sundays and Thursday,
when hours are noon to 6 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 and include the show's
catalog and lectures. Park Avenue Armory is at 67th Street and Park Avenue.
Net proceeds support East Side House Settlement, a non-profit institution
that provides social services to community residents in the South Bronx. The
Winter Antiques Show was created by the charity in 1955, and is still owned
and produced by East Side House Settlement. It is the only major New York
antiques show from which all net proceeds benefit a charity. East Side House
provides services to families that help them pursue education, and become
career ready "to improve their economic status and lead more fulfilling
lives."
The show's 73 exhibitors are described as experts in their fields, and they
encourage visitors to meet with them to learn about antiques and the
importance of preserving and living with history. Considered to be among New
York's most prestigious, the Winter Antiques Show is said to be visited by
museum curators, antiques dealers, design professionals, as well as private
collectors.
