THE Olympic curse has again struck Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang who has crashed
at his first hurdle in his heat of the 110m hurdles.
Xiang, the 2004 champion in Athens, was one of the stories of the Beijing
Olympics when he carried a bad achilles into the Games and never made it to
the first hurdle, crushing the hopes of a billion people.
His form has been improving of late but he looked to be carrying an achilles
problem again and his lack of power caused his lead foot to hit the first
hurdle and he fell heavily to the track.
A shell-shocked Xiang eventually picked himself up but was badly limping and
then tried to hop down the straight to exit the track.
After the horrors of Beijing, this was supposed to be redemption for Xiang
who came to London the second fastest in the world this year and was the
main challenger to American Aries Merritt. | s******n
