Hi this is xx and xx of Ahuimanu O`ahu, as best as can figure out you and
your group rescued our son Joshua from El Dorado yesterday. Words cannot
express what that means to us. Josh called from the ranger station last
night and then again from the hospital. He is alright, nothing broken,
bruised ribs and tailbone. He is very humbled right now and am positive
that he will learn from this incident. From the description have gotten so
far it was your group that got him into some dry clothes and off the
mountain. He knows how fortunate he is that the Mountaineers were nearby.
We are doing what we can to encourage him to take a class and to follow safe
hiking/climbing practices. Mahalo nui loa and much aloha to you and your
group
领队的回信:
Dear xx and xx,
Sorry I was not here this afternoon to receive your very nice phone message,
but it is appreciated. It was our privilege to assist Joshua and we are
grateful to have been there at the right time.
Joshua has certainly told you what happened, but for your information here
is how it appeared to us. He was glissading (sliding down a snow field)
when he fell into a hole made by a stream flowing beneath the snow. Two
nearby hikers saw him fall in; that was probably what saved Joshua. They
called to our group of 12 who were just above, and we came to help. Joshua
managed to climb out by himself despite his injuries. He had pain in his
ribs and hip but the immediate problem was that he was severely hypothermic,
so cold he could barely speak and was shivering uncontrollably. Members of
our group got him out of his wet clothes and into two nested sleeping bags
with a space blanket over and insulating pad under him. They then got a
camp stove and made a hot drink with lots of sugar to warm him. At that
point he was able to speak sufficiently to describe his injuries and give us
his name and yours. Using the first aid training that is part of our
climbing course, they also gave him an examination to assess his injuries.
I must say that Joshua was a model patient, lucid and cooperative. That is
not always the case following trauma and hypothermia.
We had no way of knowing what internal injuries Joshua might have. Thinking
he might need to be flown out, we sent two strong, fast party members out
to initiate the rescue. Within a half hour, Joshua felt he might be able to
walk out with assistance. The descent involved some very difficult walking
over large boulders. Joshua was in pain but did seem to be improving and
made steady progress. Members of our party took all of his equipment so at
least he had no pack to carry, and we gave him poles for balance.
Part way down, we encountered a guided party. One of the members was a
nurse and the leader had a satellite phone. The nurse did an examination
and concurred that Joshua could probably continue unless he worsened. The
guide phoned out and told Park officials to cancel the rescue our two were
going to request. Near the road, we met a park ranger who was coming up to
meet us. He agreed to convoy Joshua to the Park office, and then we said
our farewells.
Joshua is a fine, strong and (excepting a bad glissading decision) sensible
young man. We are all very glad we were there to assist him. He clearly
has a love of the mountains but probably should get some training. Our
program is not the only game in town, but it is a very good one. You ought
to know that all but three of our party of twelve are first year climbing
students and, with the training they have received, performed an exemplary
rescue. If Joshua is interested, we would love to have him in next year's
course. The web site is below and I would be happy to discuss it further by
email or phone if he is interested.
It is very good news that Joshua has only bruises and no fractures. Our
main concern throughout was that he might have a fractured rib, which could
be dangerous. So glad to hear that is not the case.
Please give Joshua a hug (perhaps not too robust right now) from all of us.
Sincerely,
xxx

Glad that he turns out no big issue. Too much snow at late season does
create many such incidents, danger even out of glacier.

good job, lucky young fellow; other than the bad glissading decision, maybe
the
bigger mistake is to climb on his own.

Quite scary.. but a true story.
kind of depressing though, for some adventure like that.
i guess one must take the risk when signs up for a hobby like that.

There is always risk, probably for everything.
What you can do is try to minimize the risk, either attend a class, or get
experience from outings...
In this case, people should not glissade in this snow condition and terran,
then you will not encounter this dangerous in the first place.
