"Went out today on the Schuylkill just beneath Betzwood bridge (Valley
ForgePark). We paddled upstream for a few miles enjoying the unseasonably hi
water in our surfskis. On our way back, just below the Betzwood boat ramp,
I spotted ared hull ever so slightly protruding out of the muddy water into
the bright sun.I struggled in the current to get a good hand hold on it. I
tucked my paddlebehind me, and now had a good hand hold on it. It was a
canoe, and just the tipof the hull showed. No matter how hard I pulled (and
I was pulling pretty damnhard), it would not budge. I was completely baffled
as to what the $(*&^$*^ could be holding this thing so strongly. After a
few long moments of wrestling,a voice came from the bank, and asked me to
leave it alone. Now concerned, I asked if I could help. He informed me that
there was a Jeep Wrangler under thecanoe, and the canoe was snuggly mounted
on the rack. No one was hurt.Apparently the operator had just endured the
unthinkable. He was out of the cardoing something when it slid down the ramp
, and was swept away by the unusuallystrong current. My heart goes out to
him/her, and I am reminded that "there butfor the grace of God go I". The
voice onn the bank belonged to a very largecrane operator. No one died, but
for someone, it was a "very bad day". CliffRoach
Update 8:45am: CBS-3 traffic reporter Bob Kelly said on this morning's
broadcast that he was the driver of the Jeep. [Insert joke about the flow of
traffic here.]
