iOS 13, iPadOS Compatibility For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Devices
By Paul Morris | June 4th, 2019
Apple’s initial preview of iOS 13 and iPadOS is now out in the public
domain, which means that the informational floodgates are about to open.
To quench your thirst for iOS 13 and iPadOS-based knowledge, here is a
compatibility chart to assist you in determining whether or not iOS 13 and
iPadOS will ultimately run on your existing iPhone, iPod touch or iPad
devices respectively.
Let’s jump back a couple of years and consider the release of iOS 11. With
that announcement, Apple took the rather bold – but ultimately correct –
step of eliminating compatibility for all 32-bit devices. That release meant
that only newer devices built on top of Apple’s 64-bit architecture were
able to download and install iOS 11.
That particular change set the scene for iOS 12 and has continued with iOS
13 and iPadOS to ensure that anyone consuming the platform has a device
capable of running the latest technologies and providing the best possible
experience in terms of performance, power conservation, and memory
management.
So, clearly, there is no 32-bit support as per the last two major iOS
releases, but there are also a few surprise omissions from the supported
devices list. We got wind of this ahead of this official maiden iOS 13 and
iPadOS previews but it has now been confirmed. All compatible devices are
listed below:
iPhone (iOS)
iPhone XR
iPhone XS
iPhone XS Max
iPhone X
iPhone 8
iPhone 8 Plus
iPhone 7
iPhone 7 Plus
iPhone SE
iPhone 6s
iPhone 6s Plus
iPad (iPadOS)
iPad Air 3 (10.5-inch)
iPad Air 2
iPad 6 (9.7-inch)
iPad 5 (9.7-inch)
iPad Pro (9.7-inch)
1st/2nd/3rd Gen iPad Pro (12.9-inch)
iPad Pro (10.5-inch)
iPad Pro (11-inch)
iPad mini 5
iPad mini 4
iPod touch (iOS)
iPod touch 7th generation
If you study the compatibility list above – paying specific attention to
the initial iPhone section – you’ll immediately be able to see that the
list is missing a few contenders. With the release of iOS 13 and iPadOS,
Apple has culled support for iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and all devices
prior to that hardware which were previously supported with iOS 12.
If you own one of those devices but want to consume iOS 13 for iPhone and
iPadOS for iPad, then you are going to get your thinking cap on and
seriously consider an upgrade to a newer device. If your device is listed
above, then congratulations, Apple has deemed you worthy to be supported
with the official release of iOS 13 and iPadOS later this year. |
