Whether your old boss has got tenure or not.
How powerful is he in the department?
How did you two break up?
Several hints:
1.Usually, a tenure professor does not want much trouble.
2.If your new boss is strong in the department (usually means politically
strong), he could handle it for you if your old boss is not very strong.
3. He did NOT fail you directly.
