of the Houston population that has not lost their collective minds over
this issue. All they want is to have the same common-sense protections as
Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, San Antonio, countless other major American
cities and nearly half the states in the U.S.
They want the same basic non-discrimination guidelines that many major
employers, tour promoters and relocation consultants expect in the places
they do business.
Houston’s proposed ordinance, which was adopted by the City Council last
year – but suspended pending Tuesday’s vote – bars discrimination based
on more than a dozen categories including race, age, religion, military
status, and whether you’re pregnant. The idea is to make sure people don’t
lose their jobs for being gay, or kept out of nightclubs because they’re
old, or barred from pancake restaurants because they’re Muslim, or any of
the other petty, idiotic slights that people impose against one another
based on irrational bias and fear.
Almost all of that has been ignored, however, by HERO opponents. Instead,
they homed in like laser-guided tracer bullets on just two of the categories
on which discrimination is prohibited – sexual orientation and gender
identity. Then they took the entire discussion, quite literally, to the
toilet."
