brand name is basically a trademark.

innovator, and after patent expiration, other companies can market the
therapeutically equivalent and bioequivalent drug products with same amount
of the drug in the same dosage form, but under different commercial names.
All of these drug products, except the original one, are called the generic
drug products, and the commercial names or trade names of these products are
called generic names.
