NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Merck & Co. soared on heavy volume to close at
their highest price in three and a half years Friday after a federal judge
dismissed an investor class action lawsuit against the company over Vioxx
and reports that a state judge is about to try to dispose of thousands of
liability lawsuits in Texas.

The pharmaceutical sector stands to enjoy some positive attention today, as
Merck (MRK: sentiment, chart, options) lifted its first-quarter and annual
profit outlook, for the second time in four months, citing strong
performance for all of the company's brands.
The drugmaker said it expects to earn 84 cents per share (excluding items)
in the first quarter, a full 20 cents better than Wall Street's current
target of 64 cents per share. Looking ahead to 2007, MRK expects
