objection to photographs that had been set up; it was simply that he did not
consider himself imaginative enough to invent a world as fascinating (and
often, as bizarre) as the one that confronted him on the street every day.
Another American photographer, Paul Caponigro, once said: "Of all my
photographs, the ones that have most meaning for me are those that I was
moved to make from certain vantage point, at a certain moment and no other,
and for which I did not draw on my abilities to fabricate a picture,
composition-wise or other-wise. You might say that I was taken in."
