At sixty-eight, at seven o’clock on a gary March morning, he (Eugene Atget)
may have felt a special kinship with this particular pine--a tree scarred
by life and slighted by time, eccentric but still vital and compelling--
which should be photographed perfectly, in a way that would match, or echo,
it own unrepeatable identity.
This should be done not because it might bring him wealth, fame, power,
esteem(then or later), or a higher station here or in heaven, but because it
was what he did best, and in fact the only thing left for him to do. He had
achieved a little security and had learned that it did not protect him from
the inevitable, lonely failure that is our common end. While waiting for
that consummation he would do his best work--not for others or for tradition
, but to prove to himself that what he saw was true.
The others, and the tradition, were merely the beneficiaries.
