I was waiting for a train in Brooklyn, New York, at 6PM yesterday. On
the other side of the train station, on a bench, there sit a lay with
her two kids.
The sun was going down. But the sun light was still very bring. It came
from the same direction as the young family, and it left hard shadows on
the ground.
I wanted to capture the light! I didn’t have my Nikon camera with me,
but in my pocket, I carried a Canon S95. It’s the moment for the tiny
camera to shine.
I was concerns with the dynamic range of the scene. It would be ideal to
have a reflector to wash out the shadow. First of all, I don’t have a
reflector with me. Second, I couldn’t fly over the railroad to the other
side to set it up. This became a real problem, especially for such a
small camera.
I waited patiently. Then the train came. Right before the train get in
between my camera and the family, I pressed down the shutter. The
shinning surface of the train worked perfectly as a reflector to light
up the kids’ faces. We got it!
In fact, the train was just one foot out of the picture. I cropped it
out in LR.
