b****y 发帖数: 103 | 1 I was shocked to hear that Fang Lizhi passed away. It was a very powerful
sad feeling.
I was a student of him at Arizona, long time ago. I heard about his stories
at USTC, wondering what kind of man he is. While at Arizona, I was quite
excited to attend his class in the spring semester. My first impression of
him is his size. He was quite short and chubby. He always stared at sky
while walking, so we joked that he is studying astronomy all the time. One
might imagine a guy like him must be quite erratic and hard to approach due
to his long time skirmish with politics. One also might guess that his
lecture must be terribly boring and hard to understand due to his strong
accent. Well I found out, with pleasant, that both claims are not true. He
is a genuine guy , who is always ready to help other people, especially his
students. He is always ready to have an open discussion with anyone at
anytime. That may explain that his waterloo in China between 1984 and 1989.
Aren’t we all be scolded by our parents of being too trustworthy towards
strangers at certain point of our life and then changed in one way or
another? Well it seems to me that Dr Fang never changed. And yes, he does
have a strong accent while speaking English. But that is not a problem for
me, because I always interpreted his sentences to Chinese and enjoyed every
words of it. Actually my fellow American students did not have any trouble
with his English at all. Dr Fang always enjoyed very high rating from
students!
After a while, I noticed that Dr Fang always kept science and politics at
two different boxes. He never talked to us about any politics, although I
guess he must have a lot to talk about on that subject. Till one day, I
realized that he was still involved in some level of politics. On that day,
He invited Wang Dan to Arizona to talk about 1989 movement and their
personal experience. Sometimes I fell personally that this may be his way
to protect his Chinese students at Arizona. After all, Chinese politics can
be extremely hurtful.
Overall I feel he is a very good physicist, a very good teacher, and a
very friendly and decent man. Any one, who can earn this kind of comment
from his/her formal students, must lead a fruitful and satisfying life till
the end. Such kind of life does not guarantee you will always be happy, on
the contrary, it can and will have happy peaks and stressful downs. But it
will guarantee one thing, which is you will be surrounded by love at the end
. Dr Fang just complete his journey, and at the end he is surrounded by
family, friends, colleagues and students. I am sure he has earned his seat
near the brightest star he always loves.
Rest in peace, Dr Fang! We will all miss you. |

setence.
(2) Prof. Fang did not have a PhD degree.
