This is a place in the north of Sakhalin where even a Sakhalin dweller
rarely comes, tourists are not even mentioned. It’s a desert island Moneron
in the Japanese Sea. Quite hard-to-reach because it is a border zone, a
special permission is needed for debarkation.
Sakhalin is the world third place inhabited by sea lions. They are so
interesting to watch!
Moneron is a volcanogenic island.
This pier was built long ago by the Japanese. They called this island “
Kaibato” which is translated as “the island of sea lions”.
In fact Moneron has some Japanese settlements though almost nothing has
remained of them.
Only some inspectors live on the island, they are responsible for meeting
visitors. They are also building a tourist centre. Their monthly salary is 3
~5 thousand dollars.
The island is considered to be a national nature park and a border zone.
People come here by boat, the cost depends on how generous or greedy owners
of boats are. Anyway one should have a special pass proving he is not a spy
and isn’t going to sail to Japan.

Sakhalin is an interesting land, it does not resemble most Russian places.
It’s 600 times closer to Japan than to Moscow! You’d want to come here
again. And you gonna miss it once you say goodbye to this land. | t*****g
