The Staten Island ferry from Manhattan
is like the last scene of a movie,
when the camera pans slowly away
from the city where all the action took place.
I turn my head from bright lights of buildings
toward bright lights of bridges
and wonder whether to think it all beautiful
or mourn the waste of starlight.
Unable to decide, I focus on the people,
melange of tourists, bums, commuters,
and wonder once again,
"Are they beautiful or are they all a waste of life?"
