Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree required; preferably in psychology, communication sciences
& disorders, human development & family studies, or related field.
License/certification:
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Prior experience conducting research with children is highly preferred.
Preference will be given to applicants who have experience working with
individuals from diverse backgrounds (especially minorities and low-income
families). Training in phonetic transcription is strongly preferred.
Experience with running eye-tracking experiments and with administering
standardized tests is desirable.
Formal coursework in phonetics and research methods are preferred; strong
computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office desirable. Fluency in a
non-mainstream dialect of English in addition to Standard American English
is desirable.
Principal duties:
The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human
development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases
throughout the lifespan. One of only 15 centers of its kind in the United
States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and
behavioral research, a brain imaging center, and a clinical bio-
manufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage
human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center
provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities,
offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and
their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our
nation in the future.
This position will be split between two labs: The Learning to Talk Lab (68.
75%) and the Infant Learning Lab (31.25%) to assist with technical research
tasks, recruitment of study participants and data analysis.
The Learning to Talk Lab is a small research group that focuses on child
speech and language development. We are currently conducting a longitudinal
study of the relationship between speech sound development and vocabulary
development in children aged 2 through 5 years.
The Infant Learning Lab is a small research group that focuses on infant
language learning and language comprehension. Studies focus on infants aged
6 months to 3 years of age.
Position responsibilities:
70% - Test infant and child research participants in the lab by presenting
them with tasks that are designed to assess their speech and language
development. This includes running participants through a series of tasks
such as eye-tracking tasks, experimental tasks, and standardized tests.
20% - Recruit research participants from diverse communities within Madison.
10% - Assist with data analysis of testing information. Code eye-tracking
data from videos and phonetically transcribing children's audio recordings.
A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
A period of evaluation will be required
