Project description:
A postdoctoral research position is available in Optical & Photoacoustic
Imaging Research and Analysis (OPIRA) Laboratory. This position is available
to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic young scientist who
wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating
environment. The successful candidate will be part of a project carried out
jointly by the Biomedical Engineering and Medical School of Wayne State
University under the supervision of Dr. Mohammad Avanaki, PhD, and Dr. Juri
Gelovani, MD/PhD. The research focuses on the development of a photoacoustic
tomography system using single element transducers and a novel mechanical
design to be transferred from bench-top to pre-clinical and clinical
applications. In particular, the candidate will be responsible for the
design and implementation of a 3D photoacoustic, tomographic imager, the
relevant data acquisition and analysis as well as in-vivo testing on rat and
sheep models towards testing it on infants. These findings will be
translated to equivalent studies on infant and are expected to benefit brain
diseases diagnostics in the clinics. We have already imaged mouse brain
vasculature using photoacoustic tomography (Please see the article in M.
Avanaki et. al., PNAS 2014).
The project is a multi-disciplinary project which will require expertise /
interest in bio-medical optics, electronics, acoustics, neurology and state-
of-the-art imaging modalities.
Required qualifications:
1- Applicants with Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics,
Biomedical Physics, or Computer Engineering background are preferred.
2- Experience in instrumentation, in particular data acquisition, motor
control and signal processing are the key requirements for this position.
3- Applicants who have experience in programming in C or Matlab are
preferred.
4- Knowledge of optics, ultrasound, and design of medical devices is
compulsory.
