their code under the free license normally they can't revoke it.

do it for the good of all, some do it for fame, some (especially
corporations) do it for indirect profit. The profit can come from
premium versions, services, promoting beneficial industry standards,
marginalizing competitors, or even good PR. There are also cases
people have to release their source code because they distribute
a product that uses a GPL-style licensed component.
