I think you can just honestly say because of Depression. You are not doctor
and you don't need know exactly what caused your depression. Depression is
a normal disease for many Americans, in particular for those in graduate
school.
Visa officers should understand. What you'd emphasize is that you've already
fully recovered. And you are able to go back to finish your degree. Good luck!
