昨天宣布奖金,我之前的年终评价是A+,而且我们的产品去年还是赚了些钱的,所以还
是有点期许。宣布以后比较失望,就直接跟老板说了。老板尽力解释,说我的奖金在组
里已经是比较高的了,而且因为我的基本工资比较高所以奖金就显得低了,之类的。说
实话这老板平常对我也还行。我对他表示感谢就去叫下一个人了。
事后想想是不是当时表现得有点过,让他觉得我太贪婪?

你这个贴子看的我真郁闷。
我也应该象你这么大胆直接跟老板说钱发的不够。现在都错过了说的机会。

Rule #1: Never Never complain bonus till you resign
Rule #2: Never Never work less due to disappointing bonus till you resign
It is simply binary, either you vote by walking, or you stay, in that case
complaint does you no good

你complain也没用,你老板拿到的bonus pool估计就少的可怜,他也变不出钱来呀,也
不能都给你呀。

我感觉老板主动和你谈心(注意不是谈话!),可能会好好培养你,给你个规划什么的
,加个base,告诉你一些公司的内幕结构啥的。
老板被动和你谈心,基本上都是扯淡,不知道大家感觉怎么样?

奖金不是工资的百分之几吗?怎么会base高就显得低呢?估计只有跳了才会涨。

no firm would decide your bonus based on your base, at least in wall st. It'
s always a dollar number.
% of base is just a convenient way to express your number without giving too
much information.

Bonus process is complex. Just a few random points
1. It is a whole year relationship building story - if your # comes as a big
negative surprise for you, you need to think about if there is something
wrong between you and your manager
2. Official process often starts around November - of course shops have
varying practice. Direct manager sends up proposal to his boss, and so on,
and so forth, pools it up, of course with top-down guidance on the pool size
. Sometimes there are even forced ranking, for the pie cutting, and nowadays
also layoff candidates. If you are the so-called inner circle of your
direct manager, you should know the ballpark # before YE. The # is not final
, as the chain of bosses will adjust, but usually it is around there.
3. Managers are supposed to manage expectation - it is his job to avoid ppl
getting too upset when seeing the #. So in December managers would
repeatedly say things like: the mkt ain't good, revenue sucks bla bla to
lower the expectation. Actually, nowadays layoff before the # day is another
ugly way to manage expectation. So normal case, you should have a rough
idea if the manager did his job
4. Manager has all incentives to pay you right - it is not his money anyway,
and a happier report is always better than a frustrated one. He also will
avoid over- paying you as he needs rooms for the years to come, and to avoid
you use that to jump - but this is more of a pre 08 trick, nowadays most
managers have headaches lacking $ to motivate ppl. So you can trust your
manager did what he can, unless you pissed him bad.
5. So complaining about # after u seeing it is silly - it should be a year
round effort, not one day, particularly not that day. Yes, u can call that
as ass-kissing if you like, but relationship does not come off thin air
6. Remember if you feel bad about ur #, most likely your boss feel the same.
Complaint only makes u look not mature. Stop working after bad # is even
worse, as ppl will remember and there is a next year if u stay
If for whatever reasons u think u r really underpaid - and u have tried
enough to build up credential and relationship, just quit. Vote by walking
and a better offer, it is the only way that works
Most importantly, manage your own expectation given this mkt. I have friends
who made 7 figures as first year VP before, now much more senior but calmly
accepting 300k. The world has changed. But again if u r super star, vote by
walking. No complaints, no tears.

说个例子吧,有人indirectly complain啦,bonus没有变,但是1个月后加了retention
bonus ...

Great post!
But I think in certain sense communicate one's expectation to the manager is
also necessary. Ideally this is done before the bonus day rather than later
, otherwise how could the manager know where each report's line is at. If a
report is a good performer and the manager wants to keep him, he might find
other possible ways to compensate him. But of course many times managers are
not good at their jobs. They either dont know who is truly valuable, or
dont know how to manage a team. In that case as BP mentioned vote with your
feet.
