It is ugly to the ears.
But it is true.
I personally have not been subject to a direct verbal insult but there are
too many non-verbal ways by which you can feel the hostility.
Let me quote a frequent scenario: at the cashier lane of a local supermarket
you are standing behind a white American who is engaged in casual talk with
the cashier. The cashier seems very polite and uses all possible courtesy
words to the customer in front of you. Now it is your turn, you say hi to
the cashier, yet she/he may not even return the courtesy. Also, when
scanning the items, the cashier is quiet. Upon completion of the transaction
, you find yourself to be the one saying "Thank you" while the cashier seems
a little bit mind-absent and already moves his/her head sideways...
It is things like this that make you conscious that you are not once of "
them".
