Rick Santorum suggested to a New Hampshire crowd on Friday it was better for
a child to have a father in prison than to have a same-sex parent.
The Los Angeles Times reports Santorum cited the work of an anti-poverty
expert before claiming "he found that even fathers in jail who had abandoned
their kids were still better than no father at all to have in their
children's lives."
Santorum went on to say that "marriage is not a right, it's a privilege that
is given to society by society for a reason," and that a same-sex couple
with children is "robbing children of something they need, they deserve,
they have a right to."
The former Pennsylvania senator argued with a 17-year-old girl on Thursday
over the same issue, and has been clear about his opposition to gay marriage
in the past. In 2003, he told the Associated Press about his disapproval of
homosexual acts.
"If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex within
your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy
, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery," Santorum
said. "You have the right to anything. Does that undermine the fabric of our
society? I would argue, yes, it does." | D**S
