MARYLAND MARRIAGE WATCH X390 (SCOTT MCPHERSON/PHOTOS.COM) | ADVOCATE.COM
The Maryland Senate is expected to begin debate on the marriage equality
bill Thursday as opponents plan amendments intended to derail the
proposal
that narrowly passed the House of Delegates last week.
The Associated Press reports that Senate President Thomas V. Mike
Miller,
who postponed the debate from Wednesday upon request of Republican
leaders,
said that discussion could continue into Friday before a final vote is
taken
. A Senate panel advanced the measure in a 7-4 party line vote on
Tuesday.
The bill passed the House last Friday in a 72-67 vote, including
amendments
that would delay its effective date from October 2012 to January 2013
and
keep the law from taking effect until any litigation related to a
potential
referendum is processed. According to the AP, opponents of the bill
asked
Attorney General Doug Gansler for feedback on the constitutionality of
the
amendments, and his office sent letters that confirmed their soundness.
Any
changes in the Senate version would force the bill back to the House,
where
approval for a second time would not be guaranteed.
Reuters reports that opponents in the Senate are considering amendments
that
would change the effective date of the law back to October 2012 and
broaden
its religious liberty protections. Still, Senate leaders expect to pass
the
bill, which passed for the first time last year in a 25-21 bipartisan
vote.
Governor Martin O’Malley has vowed to sign the bill, but opponents plan
to
push for a referendum. According to Reuters, some 56,000 signatures
would be
needed to put the measure on the ballot this November, one-third of
which
would have to be submitted by May 31 and the remainder by June 30.
美国的马里兰州有望同性婚姻合法,参议院当地时间2月23日投票25-22通过了同性婚姻法案,法案

now approved same-sex marriage. Once governor Martin O’Malley signs the law
, Maryland will be the eighth state to enact same-sex marriage. Attempts by
marriage bigots to kill the bill were defeated.
O’Malley thanked Senate President Mike Miller for his efforts to get the
bill passed saying “All children deserve the opportunity to live in a
loving, caring committed, and stable home, protected equally by the law.”
Marriage bigots now have to gather a minimum of 55,726 signatures to put
this on the ballot in November in order to veto this measure. Polls show
Marylanders are evenly split on the issue. Maryland follows Washington State
in approving same-sex marriage. Washington faces the same issues with a
referendum as Maryland.
New Jersey’s legislature passed same-sex marriage as well, but it was
vetoed by Governor Chris Christie.

Plurality Of Washington Voters Support State's Gay Marriage Law
A plurality of Washington state voters would vote to keep the state's
recently approved gay marriage law.
Governor Chris Gregoire earlier this month signed into law a gay marriage
bill approved by lawmakers. Gay and lesbian couples may wed in the state
starting on June 7.
That is, provided opponents do not gather sufficient signatures to put the
law up for a vote. In which case marriage equality would be put on hold
pending the outcome of a November election.
Referendum 74 supporters insist the public will vote to end gay marriage in
the state. But in 2009, voters rejected an effort to repeal a domestic
partnership law dubbed “everything but marriage” which gave gay couples
all the protections of married heterosexual couples.
According to a Public Policy Polling survey of 1,264 Washington voters
released Wednesday, supporters of the marriage law outnumber opponents.
Fifty percent of voters say they'll vote to uphold the law, while 46 percent
say they would vote to repeal it.
A large majority of voters (78%) also support either marriage (46%) or civil
unions (32%) for gay couples. Only 20 percent of respondents said there
should be no legal recognition of a gay couple's relationship.
“Even 59% of Republicans at least support civil unions,” the survey's
authors noted in announcing their results. “That may bode well if there's a
repeal vote this fall – almost all voters in the state are at least
somewhat accepting of same-sex relationships.” |
m******8 发帖数: 2153 | 28 Keep religion out of government
I went to Gov. Chris Christie’s official website to write a note about gay
rights and was dismayed to not find a relevant topic selection under which
to submit my comments. Gay rights is central to any discussion about
equality today and deserves a place to comment.
For whom is Christie putting up a roadblock against gay equality? Clearly
not for those who seek the fairness and equality that are the cornerstones
of our Constitution. Being governor is a difficult job, but equality is not
a tough position to take.
In law school, students study the Constitution and learn about civil rights
and justice. The governor, a lawyer, took an oath to support and defend the
Constitution. He has every right to follow his private, personal religious
beliefs. But putting his private, personal beliefs above the duty he has to
all the people he governs is a violation of that oath.
Governor, religion belongs in your church with your god, not in the halls of
public governance, where the rules have been established by the people, for
the people. It appears you are using religion as a political tool. Shame on
you — you should know better.

August through December 2010, to $2.26 million in the same period last year,
after same-sex nuptials went into effect, according the City Clerk’s

a******c 发帖数: 291 | 49 My data are from the following coverage in Washington Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/half-of-marylan
To quote the poll: "Overall, the Post poll found that 50 percent of
Marylanders support allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry while 44
percent are opposed."
That leaves 6% undecided.
The reason I am less optimistic about the referendum is that gay-marriage
opponents are more motivated to vote than supporters. Some people will voice
their support for gay marriage when interviewed over the phone, but feel
reluctant or too lazy to go to the voting booth on the election day. "What
has it got to do with me?" they might ask themselves.
I live in Maryland. The atmosphere here is quite accepting in general to
gay people. But again almost all my neighbors are white-collar and seem
quite educated and open-minded. A retired engineer living next door has
volunteered to repair our lawn mower several times and always invites us to
his family party. His wife loves the Thai noodle we made.
