As strange as it might seem to outsiders, to the party leadership the
Cultural Revolution is synonymous with democracy, both posing threats to
their power. Instead of Marxist ideology, the party emphasizes its record of
maintaining stability, fostering economic development and making China a
strong state to keep the "masses" loyal. | D**S
