a few instant thoughts: i got a strong impression that this hero was in a
mental relapse. wasn't he in some special school? and many classics, and
canons could feel very indolent & cynical.

perhaps ppl adopt it for black humer fics. (the book is done in 1951) You are
hold at this level of disbelief in pulp fiction and lock, stock and two

eh but didn't you feel he had a boyish innocence? i actually thought it was
lovely. he appeared very cynical and rebellious and whatever,
but deep down he was terribly brittle and puzzled, could be easily shattered.
weakness and indolence were forgivable for a youth.. on the other hand, i
have odd notions on books; seems i always found loveliness in weird lots.
