can't help replying you again.. sigh, with wilde's excellent
original, it's really hard to translate it into something that
doesn't look good. I still suggest u go read the original, you
can find them easily in your schools' library. search for:
Oscar Wilde
and the first one you want to read might be the last one he
wrote, which is .

Hehe, I was able to find some of his work on the Internet yesterday and spent
the night reading and his fairy tales. God, he's REALLY
a genius. Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

I wanted to read Yu's translation too, he seems to have done the translation
job beautifully (from what I've read in RainGong's post).

in fact, althought I'm a complete Wilde fan, I don't personlly
like his plays very much. it's true that the plays are all
entertaining and witty and Wildish, but in my point of view,
nothing explains Wilde's art better than his second novel

his fairytales were okay; other than that, plays, novels were just soso
ah..certainly i never felt excited to read wilde..well maybe shouldn't say
this becoz i never managed to finish any of his novels or plays and had no
comprehensive knowledge. his "wit" excerpted in raingong's post looked
mediocre and flippant somewhat...

Some of his witty lines are actually quite serious.
Try these two:
"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."
"All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does.
That's his."
am trying to convert you:)

these were what i called mediocre.;) smart. yes. but mediocre. maybe i was
biased. there were tons of wit and wisdom in tons of classics. and his way
of stating and illustrating them simply didn't intrigue me. the first bad
impression came from a play of his, about a few young people, their
misunderstanding etc...it was comic, shrewd etc. but on the whole it lacked
something, and i always felt on the other hand it was overdone somehow; the
same thing even went to some of his farytales lik

Really? :) I spent hours and hours reading his plays this weekend... and I
think they are so fantastic ... very hard to pick a favorite.
His fairy tales are almost always in deep sorrow, about love, death, and
people's indifference to these really valuable things. They bleeded so badly
that it really hurts to read them. So are some of his earlier plays, like "A
woman of no importance".
It may amuse you that Wilde doesn't seem to think high of his wit either. He
mentioned "intellect is never seri
