These days, I am reading Carl Sagan and Philip K. Dick. I guess that's because
the recently Mars missions.
I am still digrest the result of my previous shopping spree, a ton of atlas
and war books. Mostly WW2. I love those fancy maps.
However, I don't have much time reading. My meager leisure time was unevenly
divided by all my hobbies: reading, gaming, HAM radio (still practicing my
morse code, don't have much time for that), constantly tweakling my sound
systems.

Woolf的Mrs Dalloway.
新年后看了不少best sellers (我列过一个书单),看完the Pillards of the
Kazuo Ishiguro (When we were
orphans), Chang-Rae Lee (Native Speaker) 和 Best American Travel Writing (最近

Read “Native Speaker” and it was enjoyable. My only objection is the book
structure: two stories of the protagonist were going in alternatively
chapters, and I ended reading the even and odd chapters separately.
Other good novels on the immigrant experience in America: Jhumpa Lahiri
“Intepreter of Maladies” (Pulitzer 2000), Jeffrey Eugenides “Middlesex”
(Pulitzer 2003)

8th grade level

This kind of structure is quite annoying. However, sometimes it helps to
relief the stress that built up. Shifting to another story line, you
temporarily let it go the built-up stress.
Several months ago, I read Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. It divided the
stories line into four or five parts, each in a separate time stage. In the
end, the stories end at page 900+, all converging together. That's kind of
awful.
I have yet to read his Quicksilver, another huge tome. Mixed reviews, but it
seems

Yeah, the worse kind is when separate storys converge at the very end, so
during most of the reading you have no clue what one has to do with the other
.
Among Sci-Fi books, I think William Gibson's "Idoru" is an example. On ther
other hand, Arthur C. Clarke's "The Fountains of Paradise" shares a similar
structure in an enjoyable way, because the 2 stories are intricatly connected.

The worst thing is: from one story line (because it happens much later than
other), you already know what happened in another thread. You lost suspension.
However, Stephenson's books are not "artificially plot driven", it actually is
pure digressions, erudite and engaging digressions. That's why although his
books are lengthy, but there are still a lot of fans. Like some of Poul
Anderson's books, lengthy but not dull.

yeah, reading is definitely very personal and it's hard to trade ideas. Good
luck finding books to read, we obviously don't intersect much. :)

Best American Travel Writing 2000 (Ed. Bill Bryson) was an excellent read. It
made me miss my travelling days...
Lee writes with a voice I cannot quite grasp, maybe he tries too hard. I
quitted half way.
Ishiguro writes well I have to admit and I like the story.

lotr fanfiction
i've been following two pieces for a few months and it's like watching tv
drama except that there's no surety of updates and wrapping up. their quality
is wearing down as they are going really lengthy, overstretched like "butter
on the bread", yet i can't help sticking to them.;)
"the princess bride", 3rd time to mention this & 2nd time to read this. it
sparkles. puts a reader on an understanding position instead of a fully
amused one.
