I always have difficulty understand the first two pages of the Great Gatsby.
So I try to read this translation. It helps understanding. But I felt the
translation is really dry. How do you guys feel?

You have to read the original to understand it better.translation can seldom
help at all. It's someone else's understanding of the original text.
You can start reading the other parts of the novel and come back to the
beginning later. The latter parts disclsoe all the hidden information in the
first several pages.

I read it through before. Maybe because the language was
still difficult for me, I did not find the story that
catching.
After reading the translation, finally understand those
difficult sentences word by word. So, guess the book
might be different if I can overcome the language difficulty.
I am sitting in an under's class, will see what those
young hearts talk about it. Their opinion are quite
interesting and funny sometimes.

Some detailed question: here "what preyed on Gatsby"
means his soul is taken by wealthe or his life and
love being taken by the society? The translation seems
to be the former. But I felt it is the latter. Maybe the
translation is right since Gatsby "represented everything
for which I have an unaffected scorn."
"No-Gatsby turned out all right at the end, it is what
preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake
of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest
in the abortive sorrows a

man, youe english seems 不太灵光,hehe。:-) (I'm kidding. wish it's not
offensive. )
note the word "prey". I think the word is important for the understanding of
Gatsby, very 传神. 吞噬is not a good equivalent in this case. he's haunted and
with weak personality and innocence, he's prevailed and finally loses all to
it. it's like in a hunting game. he's already been doomed because of his
destiny of being a game. i think the thing that "preys" on gatsby is much more
complicated and sophisticated than wealth

maybe you can read some background information in english. the eidtion i have
has a very good preface, the author's own thoughts and his editor's letter
etc. that drew you into the contemporary environment when this novel was done
and got you naturally interested, to shape your own feeling and judgement.
fitzgerald(sp?) himself said he wanted to produce something "simple, clear but
intricately patterned". frankly this novel is beguilingly easy becoz of no
difficult words or lenghthy sentences
