他在南卡的网页估计是自己搞的，想填啥就填啥，根本没有什么官方效力。

Some professions have "mentoring programs" in which newcomers are paired
with more experienced people, who advise them and serve as examples as they
advance. Schools sometimes offer mentoring programs to new students, or
students having difficulties.
usually Mentors and Newcomers are in the same RANK. More experienced
students can serve as mentors for new students. However, faculty members
cannot be called mentors for new coming students.

Qiwen Mu is in the same rank of new phd students or new postdocs. usually
senior postdocs or technicians are mentors for new students or new postdocs.

mentor. your case is unofficial because it's internally circulated materials.
I a tenured prof is a mentor for some junior faculty members.
however, i cannot be called mentor for junior phd students.

assigned by the graduate program. It's more like a senior friend who gives
you UNofficial guidance and becomes your personal friend.
