What you need:
1. An electric guitar, and guitar effects.
you have to have a guitar, otherwise, KaraOK suites you better. There
are too many choices for guitar, you can see a introduction by me at
the JingHuaQu.
2. A keyboard is a big bonus (I mean, if you can play keyboard).
Personally I don't think you need to buy a expensive one. Just get a

u really should follow some online guide on how to optimize ur computer
for recording.. I believe www.rmeaudio.com, who makes rme hammerfall series
soundcard.. or I believe one of the cubase user group website has a pretty
big article on such thing..
also, vst is a steinberg, who makes cubase, standard not really cubase..
it is far more superior than directx, esp for real time plugins.. such
