And I second cookiejar that swimming is the hardest to get good at, so start
asap this winter instead of waiting till

As for swimming, what's the disadvantage of using breast stroke other than
being slow? My free style (crawling) is only marginally faster than breast
stroke but I feel it's quite a bit more energy consuming for me. In a
triathlon, I don't mind slowing down the swimming part for 15-20 mins to
conserve energy. I could of course spend the next 2 years trying to improve
my crawling so that it's both faster and more energy efficient, as the
expense of reducing the training for biking and running, but the latter two
make up the bulk of time in a triathlon race. What's a good strategy here? |

experience 1-2 olympic tri's in the 1st year.

m******r 发帖数: 9604 | 9 Besides being slow, b-stroke also tires your legs and hurts your knees. I
think it's part of the reason that I injured my left knee in the Ironman AZ
race.
Also, wetsuits are designed for freestyle and not very b-stroke friendly.
Third, you'll be HATED by other triathletes if you do b-stroke!!
Even if your swimming is in better shape comapred to bike and run, I think
you should still practice freestyle. You have enough time, and it will
eventually pay off.

legs, especially running. if you only aim to finish, it's not big deal to
slow down the swimming leg and conserve energy. with the same amount of
training effort, it's a lot easier to make progress on the biking leg. you
spend half of the time in that leg anyway. getting a real nice tri bike can
easily improve your average speed by 1-2 MPH if you are at the edge of
cruising 20MPH.

i*********5 发帖数: 19210 | 12 Swim freestyle and save your legs & energy for bike & run later.
With freestyle, you don't have to kick a lot. (In breaststroke, you rely on
your legs.) When I did my first two tries this September, I was pretty much
solely relying on pulls with no kicks at all (till the final 50m or 100m to
warm up the legs for the transition and run). (I'm a newbie swimmer.)
But the optimal thing to do is some light kicks such as two-bit kick which
will help with propelling and balancing. I need to yet figure out how to do
that. ;-)

freestyle to save legs for biking and running. I will find a swimming coach

很久没游泳了。小学时候有几年夏天每周游一两次,每次1000米蛙泳,大约30分钟。自
由泳动作有问题,当年就坚持不到200米,现在应该更差。
自行车骑100mile只能到15mph sustained,还有很大提高的余地。
跑步全马330应该没问题。提高的余地不大了。
所以我的训练重点在前两项。

另外我分析: when you do b-stroke, you'll be kicked without any protection.
If you do freestyle, you can always keep one hand in front all the time for
the first several minutes.
This is a very dangerous moment.

to run a marathon next year (unless BAA tightens its BQ standard for my age
group).
My plan will be revised as follows:
2011: Start biking and swimming, do 1-day STP (Seattle to Portland bike ride)
2012: Run Boston marathon, do a half Ironman triathlon
2013: Do a full Ironman triathlon

I intended to do the Boston qualifying race next year at Vancouver and I
signed up Seattle only 4 weeks before the race just to assess my
conditioning. Really did not expect I could have made it. My training was
pretty much pure base-building.

training. Besides, there are quite few folks in Mountaineers club doing
Ironman, you may also get hook up with them for training. |
