before the start of the 100mile one, I wore my 3-lay-running clothes with a
big jacket to get a glimpse of what those 100 milers looked like. Wow,
Scott Jurek really has a 1000Watt smile, then I noticed both Scott and Anton
Krupicka were wearing shorts at this about 20F temperature. Well, they are
from Colorado, and Anton was originally from Alaska. So cold and hot are
really relative thing and I forgave myself.
It was a little crowded when the 50 mile run started. I was feeling very
good as the pace was slow. Somehow I felt too good and then I watched my
watch: 1.7mile-:) Ok, that was the reason for the good feeling. 50 mile is a
three lap course and overall the first loop I felt pretty well. I kept
running even when other walked, most of time I only chatted with others
briefly and then most of time past them. I met a boy 14 years old who said
he was doing his first 50mile. He looked so happy and I told him “you will
definitely set an age record”. One guy asked me my goal and I said it was
to finish. He said he would like to finish before 11hours. I looked at my
10min/mile pace and told him: you will definitely make it. At an aid station
, some volunteer said “ Happy New Year”. I was surprised first and then
realized he knew we just had a Lunar New year.
My left knee started to feel a little uncomfortable when I started the
second loop. The time I started to take a rest, I saw Anton. I do not want
him to see me walk! So I started to run again. And then I saw Scott, and I
yelled “go Scott” as he was a little behind others-:) As the spurs I got
from meeting these idols declined, the pain from the knees became more and
more obvious. I started to alternate between walking and running, and then
suddenly found it was so painful even to run a little bit. I was struggling
and thinking about quitting. Anyway, I have run 30miles so far. But then
suddenly, I met Scott again, somehow he said “way to go”. Then somehow I
changed my mind: at least I can walk. My goal at that time was to finish
before 12 hours so I can see the first 100mile runner: I knew the course
record is a little more than 13 hours. ( they started one hour early-:P)
Last time when I hiked with several other friends, it was about 16miles, and
I was totally fine with it, so I thought I will be ok for the last loop.
But to walk just 16 mile for a day and to run 34 and then walk another 16 is
just totally different, especially you still want to walk fast. I think I
kept on changing my pose all the time, to find any part of my legs and feet
that was not painful so I can use it. At one point, I felt my left shin area
was dumb, my first reaction was because of the timing chip, then I realized
the chip was on my right ankle. It turns out this has become my most
painful place after the race, but I did not think too much that time.
Another time, I noticed the bottom of my right feet got an acute pain, and I
thought the feet may be bleeding. But I do not want to see what was
happening. It got darker and colder, and in many part of this loop, I was by
myself. Suddenly I realized that maybe because all the other 50 milers have
finished. I kept on walking in the dark woods, and I guess in a faster and
faster speed. My 305 died out around mile 47. Then somehow I met another
runners who had headlamp and I am glad to see a little light, then somehow a
lady who must be an angel told me “girl, you are really really very close
to the finish”. I found I am so glad to get this information as the 3 mile
looks far away then.
Shortly after I finished, I heard the first 100 miler was coming. Watching
him flying in the tent, I thought “ who is this underdog”. Then I knew
he, Ian Sharman, just set a totally new course record 12:44:33, which was
about 7:30 pace for 100 miles. I am glad I finished earlier than I planned,
so I watched this stellar finish. But I got more happy to think: this is the
beauty of ultra-running. This new course record is more than 30min faster
than the one set in 1996 by Eric Clifton, and 50 min faster than Anton
Krupicka’s 2007 record. For such a long distance, you do not know who will
win and you do not know what will be the next record, while amazing things
in this field keep on happening. I laughed when Anton said himself:

me to see a doctor for my ankle-:)
This is a special community, or a special species: hardcore and spiritual.
Each one is tough on themselves, but super friendly to others! They kept
cheering on me, even when I was walking and was keeping silence to save
energy and I knew at that time they were hurting and tired....
