c*******r 发帖数: 13580 | 1 4 o’clock, I woke up 5 minutes before the alarm went off. After a light
breakfast of 1.5 bagels and a can of congee, my wife drove me to downtown
where the shuttle stop is. There was very little traffic around 5 even if
this is a big race. I arrived at the start line around 5:30.
The weather was perfect, low 50's with a layer of thin clouds. I was hoping
that the clouds would stay for the whole morning. It was a little chilly
even with long sleeves on. So I wrapped myself in the trash bag I'd brought.
Some people were huddling around a power generator for warmth.
6:40, I dropped everything but the trash bag on the UPS truck and jogged to
my corral. There were 21,000 participants and the corrals were literally
about 1 mile long. I located 3:20 and 3:15 pacers. My plan was to run in
between them.
After the national anthem, the runners started in waves. Behind me I saw a
girl who I saw in Shore Run 10K two weekends ago. In that race I chased her
for 2 miles and finally passed her. She was wearing a HM bib today. I
started right after Jason, the 315 pacer. First few miles went very smoothly
. The first band was at about mile one, but who needs to be cheered up at
mile one? At mile 3 and 4 were the first hills. I tried to drop back a
little on the up hills and catch up on the down hills. This was probably the
first mistake I made. I shouldn't have gone so fast on the down hills. At
about 5.5 miles, the course runs onto Lake WA Blvd. People around me were
chatting leisurely about the great scenery of the lake and the girls who
were running in front of us. Indeed girls who are running at 7:30 pace even
for a HM would be in great shape. The next 2 miles were the most enjoyable 2
miles I have run in any race. However, this is probably where I made
another mistake. Just because I was feeling good doesn't mean I should stick
with the 3:15 pacer. At mile 7.5, I stopped for water for the first time. I
was trying not to slow down too much while drinking and spilled some water
on my shoes. I can feel the water in my shoes and suspected it would give my
blisters later on. It'd turn out I was right.
Mile 9, the courses split. We turn right onto I90 express lane and would
join the HM course 3 miles later. Now on the open lake, the wind was picking
up. There was a group of runners gathering around Jason I tried to tuck
behind. Right before Mercer Island, our course turned around, and now there
was a slight up hill. In fact the hill was probably not that benign at all
but I wouldn't feel it since the legs were still fresh. At this point, I
tried to slow down a little and pull behind Jason.
Mile 12, we ran into the tunnel on I90 and joined the HM runners. The air
was a little stuffy. GPS lost the signal. I had expected that the GPS would
not work so I turned off auto lap before the race. Not long after we got out
of the tunnel we crossed the 13.1 mark. It was 1:38ish, only 1.5 minutes
slower than my best HM, which was run on a flatter course. I was about 1
minute behind Jason and I was still feeling good. I knew the second half was
hillier but I still thought I could do 3:20 easily since I only need to do
the second half in 1:41. Big mistake.
The course runs into down town after mile 14. The sun was now trying to burn
off the clouds. I squished down 2 GUs on a flat section of the course. Mile
15, we climbed onto Alaskan Viaduct and the HM course would turn left to
finish at Qwest Field. Little did I know this was where the real torture
would begin. The viaduct is for car traffic only and the surface is terribly
coarse. The moderate ups and downs for cars are now taking a toll on
runners' legs. There is no shade at all on this stretch. 2.5 miles onto
Alaskan, the course climbs up Aurora Bridge and then dashed down into
Ballard. I would later find out it was a 4% hill for more than half a mile
up and down the bridge. The worst part: right after you get down from the
bridge, the course turns around and you need to climb up and down again! A
few hundred yards before the turn around point, I saw the 3:15 pacer on the
opposite direction. The pack was now much smaller. I estimated that I was
about 5 minutes behind him. However I wasn’t sure if I could make 3:20 at
this point. I wasn’t breathing too heavily, my heart wasn’t beating too
fast, but the legs were showing signs of fatigue. I wasn’t able to tell up
hills from down hills. All I could feel was the pounding on the quads. The
wet foot I got from a previous water station was now causing some pain under
the left big toe. However it didn’t appear to be too bad. I was somehow
appreciative for it. It was giving me something to concentrate on so that my
vision wouldn’t go too blurry. It was a strange feeling.
Mile 21, 3:20 pacer passed me. I tried to catch up but just couldn’t pick
up the pace. I knew that things would only get worse at this point. All I
can do is to adjust my initial goal of 3:20. At the water station, I flushed
down a cup of Cytomax and grabbed another cup of water. I drank half of it
and poured the rest on my head. It freshened up my brain but not the legs.
This was now officially the “why the f am I doing this” moment. I knew it
would come, I knew I would get over it, but at that moment, I just couldn’t
understand why on earth I was torturing myself like that. People around me
started to walk. Others appeared to be as painful as I was. We would pass
each other all the time, no one seemed to be able to dart away.
Mile 22, the long downhill finally came. However, it wasn’t helping. My
heart was crying but my legs could hardly hold a 8:00 pace. At this point, I
wasn’t even thinking about my time. It was simply a matter of survival.
Mile 23 to 26 was another out and back stretch. The elevation would drop and
then gain 100 feet. It’d be a very benign hill when the legs are fresh.
But not at this moment. A couple minutes after the U turn, I saw the 3:30
pacer coming from the opposite direction. That was a big relief. I knew I
would at least beat 3:30. More people were walking and cursing. I could only
concentrate on the next water station, which was in sight. Not that I
really needed to drink, it just gave me a reasonable goal. One step at a
time, I finally reached the water station, which was on the top of the hill.
Now the next challenge: getting down the steep ramp off Alaskan Viaduct. I
tried to speed up and that’s when my left hamstring gave me a sting. I knew
a cramped hamstring on this steep downhill would definitely throw me on to
the coarse concrete and that’d be really nasty. I had to slow down a little
. After all, it was only less than half a mile to go now.
The highway ramp was finally over. The course ran into downtown. The
spectators were packed along the street. Music and cheers were loud. I
couldn’t see, I couldn’t hear. All I could concentrate was the finish line
a couple hundred yards away. Those couple hundred yards, however, appeared
so long. A photographer was taking pictures at the finish line. I looked
into his lens, but didn’t really have energy to smile. The clock showed 3:
27 and some seconds. The official chip time turned out to be 3:26:53.
The time isn’t as good as I’d hoped, but it’s what I earned from 9 months
of hard work. All those hours spent on the boring treadmill and in the
chilly rain and the darkness on the trail are now all paid off. I just
couldn’t be happier to be standing on the other side of the finish line. My
muscles were sore, the pain from the blister was now clearly noticeable.
But I couldn’t care less.
Thanks to every fellow runners from whom I acquired inspiration and
knowledge. This is a report I want to share with everyone who has the
courage to run. Your dedication and commitment will prevail. Run happy!
PS The online splits show that my last 2 miles were run at a 9:30 pace. I
think either they misplaced the mile 24 marker or the course was too long.
My GPS showed that it was more like a 8:25 pace. |

w***u 发帖数: 724 | 12 Congratulations! Saw you twice on the course and you looked great!
BTW as I replied on another post, the course (especially the last two miles)
are too long. My GPS showed the pace for my last two miles are 9:23 and 8:
56. But the official site showes it as 10:09.
Sneaking in my mini report:
Chip time: 3:55:08. A little disappointed but still more than 30 minutes
faster than my first marathon at CIM last year.
Run with the 3:45 pacer for 3 miles. Then I felt they were too slow and ran
past them by myself. In the I-90 tunnel the GPS lost signal. Unfortunately I
forgot to turn off the auto-pause feature. So after the tunnel all the
distance and time are screwed up on the my GPS. I was in a panic mode and
was caught by the 3:45 pacer at mile 14.
I ran shoulder by shoulder with the 3:45 pacer until mile 17. Suddenly I
felt a heart pain. I was very scared and immediately slowed down to close to
10:00 pace. After that it was all struggle. GPS was no longer reliable and
I couldn't accelarate fearing that my heart my break down.
Saw my wife near the finish and that cheered me up and helped me to finish
with a smile. Went to the medical tent to check my heart, but they just
measured the heart rate and blood pressure and found nothing wrong. Also the
heart pain only lasted about half mile and by the finish time I felt OK.
Will take really easy for at least a week and watch it closely. Looking at
the garmin report and I didn't find anything wrong. The highest heart rate (
at mile 17) was only 162. In my 18 mile MP run I used to have 170+ heart
rate.
Again thanks a lot for all the inspiration from this board.

first GU station is at mile 7, then the next one is at 17/21 (out and back).
I thought 7 was too early and 17 was a little too late so I carried a
couple myself and ate them after mile 14 when I felt slightly hungry, which
was probably already too late. I didn't eat any more throughout the race and
that was probably a mistake too.
In my training, I tried not to eat anything because I was too lazy to carry
any. I probably should have at least experimented a few different strategies
in the long runs. That is definitely another lesson I have learned. |

c*******r 发帖数: 13580 | 41 Recovery: for the whole afternoon, I was icing both knees and stretching.
The next morning, I could feel the soreness in quads but otherwise OK. In
the afternoon, I took a slow bike ride on my fixie bike for 14 miles. The
soreness felt a lot better after the ride. Today is the 3rd day, I'm just
back from another 14 mile ride. Avg speed was 18.4 and avg HR was 132. Looks
like the cardio vascular system has recovered pretty well. Is that a sign
that I didn't push hard enough?
